Orthodox Library - Severus of Antioch

Severus of Antioch is one of the most significant Fathers of the Oriental Orthodox communion, and one of the most important of Orthodox Christologians. He was converted to the Christian Faith as a young man, and soon committed himself to the monastic way of life in Palestine. When the monastic community began to be troubled by opposition he was sent to Constantinople to seek the support of the Emperor. In due course he was consecrated Patriarch of Antioch in 512 AD, but with the continuing controversy in the Church he found himself exiled in 518 AD. He continued to be the leading bishop of the anti-Chalcedonian movement from his exile in Egypt, and it was in Egypt that he peacefully departed in 538 AD.

A large proportion of his writings have been preserved to us in Syriac, and many have been translated into modern European languages. This page contains a selection of these materials, some of which have been translated by the London School of Orthodox Christian Studies into English for the first time.
